As Barry Swan correctly implied in his letter on January 22, it is not in the DNA of large companies to improve the pay and conditions of its workers.
To them those people simply represent a cost of production which needs to be minimised so that profits can be maximised. See "Capitalism 101" in any economics text book.
Some small businesses are an exception, but not the big corporations where self interest rules supreme. This point was further borne out on page nine of the same edition of the Mercury in an article about Gina Reinhardt, Australia's richest person. It mentioned in passing that the richest 1 per cent of Australians have more wealth than the bottom 70 per cent.
Think about that for a minute. That's a big gap.
Coalition policies aimed at looking after their mates at the "big end of town," on the basis that this will in turn lead to them looking after their workers better are a "trickle down" con.
Privilege in Australia is well entrenched. A more even distribution of wealth is long overdue and would benefit Australian society as a whole. We are supposed to be the country of "a fair go." Don't give up on that.

DREAM AND DESTROY
Solar and wind are the fleas on the dogs back of our energy generation needs. Now Labor is committing $100 million for hydrogen production which they plan to use solar and wind to produce the hydrogen.
If solar and wind can't make our electricity how are they going to make our fuel as well. The whole country will become a sea of windmills and an ocean of solar panel which need replacing every 20 years.
Wake up Australia before these dreamers destroy our country .

MAYBE FUND SCIENCE
Mr Morrison wants to spend millions of dollars commemorating 250 years since the voyage of the HMS Endeavour.
"We want to help Australians better understand Captain Cook's historic voyage and its legacy for exploration, science, and reconciliation,” he said.
James Cook was an explorer, the Endeavour expedition was a journey of science and discovery.
Can we spend millions of dollars on funding science, exploration, discovery and reconciliation rather than on a boat trip and a few parties?

SUPPORT THE WORKERS
It is very upsetting and disappointing in seeing good honest workers being subjected to constant bullying and a deprivation of fairer conditions, by these relentless power hungry greedy corporations where loyalty from honest hard working decent people means absolutely nothing.
They are absolutely disgusting and its a very poor outlook on our society if this continues
Governments should step in with proper regulations to stop this disgusting and unjust behaviour. I support the workers at PKCT.
