Now midfielder Guy Knight and Illawarra Premier League premiership-winning teammate Harry Callahan have taken on a new challenge by signing with the Wollongong Wolves.
The move was announced on the Wolves’ Facebook page on Thursday morning, as new coach Luke Wilkshire looked to build a competitive squad against the powerhouse Sydney clubs.
“I watched both players a number of times last season,” Wilkshire said in a statement.
“It is great to see local talent stepping up into the NPL competition and challenging themselves.
“It shows that if a player works hard, there is a pathway up the football chain.
“Knighty has consistently been one of the best local players for the past few years and I am confident he will add significantly to the depth of our squad.”
Knight delivered in the third minute of injury time at WIN Stadium, after Wollongong United had cancelled out Bulli’s two-goal lead.
Bulli have been the dominant Illawarra club in recent times, but remained without a win on the final day until Knight delivered in the most dramatic fashion.
Callaghan had been busy throughout and scored Bulli’s second goal in the first half. Wilkshire laid down the challenge for Callahan to prove himself at the NPL level,
“Harry is a lively talent and a real prospect for the future, provided he continues to adopt a professional attitude and works hard in training,” he said. Knight and Callaghan both played in the Wolves’ trial game against the Central Coast in October, won by the Mariners 3-1.
The Wolves have also been linked to Corrimal’s Takeru Okada, who was also part of the Mariners trial squad.
After being in the finals race for much of last season, the Wolves finished ninth, four points behind fifth-placed Rockdale.
After retiring as a player, World Cup Socceroos’ defender Wilkshire has taken the reins from former A-League player Jacob Timpano.
The new campaign begins on Sunday, March 10 against Manly United at Albert Butler Memorial Park.
