But the former Wests Devils junior played from 1966 to 1971, first grade from 1971 to 1973 and then returned in 1986 after a successful NRL career still regularly catches up with many other former players.
And did so at Wests Illawarra recently as part of the lead up to the important anniversary of the two sporting clubs that started in 1949. In fact many of the rugby league players also played cricket in the summer months.
Peter Buchanan has many stories to tell about playing in the early to mid 50’s and then continuing on in administration and being involved important decisions. He and other former players such as Klaus Reh, Greg Mullane and Dorahy reminisced about the club’s history over lunch at Wests Illawarra with Aster Group chief executive Daniel Munk recently.
They recalled how in the early 70’s the team fielded by Wests that won the premiership was good enough to compete against any Sydney side at the time. Which is why players in the Illawarra competition went on to play NRL.
