Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop in response to trauma but there are many other psychological difficulties that can come from stress or trauma including chronic anxiety and depression, anger problems, insomnia, alcoholism and relationship problems.
Dr Nick Marsden, a local clinical psychologist and director of Marsden Clinical Psychology, was in Sumatra 10 years ago when an 8.4 magnitude earthquake hit, killing thousands of Indonesians. He escaped unscathed but this started his research and clinical experience in the treatment of trauma related problems.
Growing up in the Illawarra and Campbelltown, Dr Marsden has run a mental health service in Woonona since 2014.
During this time he recognised the need to have a centre specifically designed to help adults who struggle with stress, anxiety or other trauma related difficulties so late last year he opened the Stress & Trauma Centre.
“This newly designed clinic balances the rigorous mental and emotional work of therapy with natural light and soothing decor, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation,” Dr Marsden said.
“Natural elements, e.g. timber and plant life, have been carefully arranged to promote stress reduction while the soft lighting induces a sense of coziness.”
The Stress & Trauma Centre is run by a team of professional psychologists dedicated to and focused on providing expert psychological care to adults and older adolescents who wish to build a better life for themselves, free from inner-criticism, emotional turmoil, and relationship struggles.
Therapy is individualised to suit the needs of each person because they believe that there isn’t a “one size fits all” model of care.
Dr Marsden said, “The Stress & Trauma Centre means that individuals can form an enduring relationship with their therapist so when they need help most, we are there for them.”
Medicare rebates of up to $124.50 per session are available for individuals referred by a psychiatrist or under a mental health treatment plan from their GP.
