Jared and Alex Pescud both have backgrounds in earth sciences, both love cartography and both want to share the beauty of maps with all.
Their Dreadful Maps enterprise sells prints, scrolls and framed maps that they’ve created through data software while they will also take orders for bespoke images.
From small colourful elevation maps of Mount Keira to waterways or transport systems of any place in the world, the duo can create it.
“When you have such a close affiliation with something you like having it around you,” Jared said.
“We get to give something that not only tells a story for [the customer] it tells a story about the data behind it.
“We’ve got this amazing place we live in and there’s so many different features about it.”
Different colours can be added to different maps which completely alter the overall look. Some maps make patterns look 3D while others are an abstract swirl of hues.
“We don’t really consider ourselves artists at the moment, we just really like spatial science,” Jared said.
“We’re sort of becoming artists over the journey of it all and it’s a really interesting journey we’re going on.”
The shop is only open weekends from 10am to 2pm at present as the brothers still have day jobs – Jared is an environmental educator and Alex is a geospacial analyst.
Their online store will also be fully operational soon through their website www.dreadfulmaps.com.au
