According to police, just before 10am on Thursday, a grey Volkswagen Tiguan travelling south on the Princes Motorway crashed into the rear of a mobile crane that was also heading south.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and located the driver and passenger – an 80-year-old man and an 80-year-old woman – both from Miranda, trapped in the vehicle.
They were removed and taken to Wollongong Hospital with internal injuries.
Later on Thursday, the man was transferred to St George Hospital where he died.
The woman remained at Wollongong Hospital, where she died on Saturday.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Two men travelling in the mobile crane, a 48-year-old Albion Park man and a 42-year-old Dapto man, were not injured.
