A “Protect Our Water” forum in Wollongong on Wednesday night coincides with the drop in levels of drinking water reservoirs and the activation of the desalination plant.

Illawarra Residents for Responsible Mining spokesperson Gavin Workman said the plant is a facility Illawarra residents will pay for but not benefit from.
“Forum speakers will explain how underground coal mining is damaging the water catchment and how coal mining can contaminate catchment rivers and creeks, even years after the cessation of mining,” Workman said.
“They will also speak about the expansion of coal mining in the Special Areas (inner catchment), including projects that are in the pipeline in 2019.”
Speakers include Dr Ian Wright from Western Sydney University, who is an expert on impact of mining on rivers and creeks, and Julie Sheppard from National Parks Association of NSW (NPA).
Nic Clyde from the Lock the Gate Alliance will also speak at the February 13 forum at The Church on the Mall, which will be opened by Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery.
The event running 7.30pm to 9pm, has been organised by Protect Our Water Alliance, an alliance which is being formed out of concern for the cumulative and escalating damage to Sydney Water Catchment from coal mining.
