Wollongong Animal Rescue Network (WARN) is hosting a "Puppies and Pinot" fundraiser at Dagwood bar on Market Street next Thursday.

WARN founder Naomi John said while all the puppies were looking for forever homes, the aim of the day was to promote a positive perception of rescue animals as well as responsible pet ownership.

"People go and look at rescue pets in pounds and in cages, this is about presenting them in a relaxed, fun environment," Miss John said. "A lot of people think they have to buy a breed, we want to create awareness around the joy of rescue pets and really plant a seed in people's minds."

For $10 people can spend some quality time one-on-one with the puppies with all money going back to WARN to help care for their rescued friends.

Each session is 30 minutes, with participants also welcome to purchase a glass of wine or a slider from the Dagwood bar.

Participants who do fall in love with a puppy are asked to really think about the decision then put in an application and meet with the puppy again.

"We want to know they've got the right home and the right environment for the dog and it's a long-term commitment," Miss John said.

WARN focuses on rescuing companion animals including greyhounds, cats and kittens - however they rely solely on donations.

Some of the animals who end up in their care are in dire need of veterinary treatment and/or rehabilitation.

"They deserve so much more - it’s not just about saving them and re-homing them, it’s about trying to get people on board to value them and see their worth," Miss John said.

She said her passion was expensive and donations were scarce, while they received no government funding.

Bu Miss John loves her job and is grateful for the 200 volunteers who help run the not-for-profit organisation - from dog walkers, administration staff, dog trainers and foster carers.

More fundraisers are being planned for the future, such as a Cocktails and Kittens afternoon.
