A man has been arrested after allegedly brandishing a knife as he walked along a busy Wollongong street on Wednesday afternoon.

The man was taken into custody on the footpath of Crown Street, between New Dapto Road and Staff Street, about 1.45pm.
The Mercury understands the man, of unknown age, was seen walking down the street with a knife in his hand and using it in a threatening manner.
The man was treated by a paramedic, who was in the area at the time of the arrest, for an injury to his wrist.
He was taken to Wollongong Hospital for further treatment and psychiatric care.
Officers from the Police Transport Command were on the scene. It is understood a single officer made the arrest and was supported by the passing paramedic.
