Five champion and medal-winning cheese products were chosen make up the ultimate cheese board with a selection described by Sydney Royal judges as the best seen in recent years.
Along with Bega's vintage cheddar, the Australian Cheeseboard Perpetual Trophy included Blackall Country Cheese, Woombye Ash Brie; Berry’s Creek Gourmet Cheese, Oak Blue; Meredith Dairy, Meredith Dairy Goats Cheese Original Chevre; and Berry’s Creek, Sunrise Plains.
After 35 years of judging, Sydney Royal Cheese and Dairy Produce Show chair of judges Mark Livermore said despite battling one of the hardest seasons the industry has seen, dairy farmers have managed to produce quality product that has resulted in the finest selection of cheeses.
“This was the toughest year ever to select our champions… we have put together the best ever cheese board in terms of quality,” Mr Livermore said,
“Nothing can be made without good quality milk – so a big thank you to our farmers…it has been a difficult season and our dairy farmers need to be congratulated for high quality product at this time.”
The competition saw a spike in entries from 708 catalogued entries recorded in 2018 to 869 in 2019 judged across 99 classes, while judges also noted an increase in quality, attributing that to the willingness of producers to take on board feedback from judges.
