Unfortunately there are too many people who do not respect the environment around them and dump rubbish at will,
Thankfully there are many good people in our community who are out in our region on a daily basis cleaning parts of our region.
Tireless workers who do what they do to make our city and a region a better place.
Once a year, in honour of Australia Day, our communities come together in a united effort to make a difference to where they live.
This year there were businesses out cleaning up around them.
There were schools coming together and joining forces to clean areas such as Bushrangers Bay, at the same time educating the next generation of community workers about the value of respecting the environment.
Across the Illawarra there were dozens of events across the region, all making a difference.
On Saturday a host of community organisations came together in a united effort to clean the Wollongong Harbour as well as Port Kembla and Hill 60.
In total, in the space of a couple of hours, over 150 volunteers gathered about 325 kilograms of rubbish. Phenomenal stuff. Then came this news.
In a small section of the Northern Illawarra bushland a small group of volunteers gathered for a clean up on Sunday. What they found and did was extraordinary.
In the bushland behind Austinmer and Thirroul a group of 23 volunteers recovered 30 bags of rubbish - weighing a total of about 500 kilograms.
Included in that tally was almost 1500 spray cans used by graffiti artists on a makeshift wall but just dumped to pollute the bush.
Congratulations to Lloyd Steadson and his and of volunteers on making a real difference this Clean Up Australia Day.
Congratulations to all those people who joined a Clean Up Australia Day event and thank you to all those people who get out and do it every day.
