It's a 12-month gig and while it might be hard to give back your lovable Labrador at the end, you'll be content in the knowledge that you've helped make a difference to someone with sight loss.
Someone like Helensburgh resident Kimberlee Brooker, whose life changed considerably once she was paired up with Toffee four years ago.
"I had a cane prior to Toffee who I got just after I completed my HSC," Ms Brooker, 22, said. "Now I'm just about to graduate uni and Toffee has been by my side the whole time - making it much easier to navigate around campus.
"Not only is she my guide dog, she's a great companion and I feel safer knowing she's always looking out for me."
Eight-week-old pups Honour and Hayley have a fair bit of training to do before they get to Toffee's level - and that's where the puppy trainers come in.
"They look after the puppy in their first year of life, providing them with a warm, loving home and socialising them," Guide Dogs NSW/ACT puppy development advisor Tanya Lawless said.
"They need to have a fully-fenced yard, be away from home no more than four hours at a time, have access to a car and be able to attend training days in their local area."
Guide Dogs NSW/ACT pays all the bills for the puppy - the food, veterinary care, flea and tick prevention - while a puppy development advisor is available to provide support.
Ms Lawless said after the year, the dogs were underwent further training at the organisation's Sydney premises before they were paired with a new owner.
"It takes over two years and costs $50,000 to raise breed, raise and train each guide dog, which are provided at no cost to those who need them."
In Australia, 28 people are diagnosed with sight loss that cannot be corrected every day, including nine who will become blind.
An estimated 122,000 people in the state of NSW and the ACT have a vision impairment serious enough to affect their everyday lives.
