Captain Scott McAndrew claimed four wickets as Kookas were bowled out for 150, before the Oak Flats batsmen made their way to 3-80 at stumps.
"There was a fair bit in the deck," McAndrew said. "We had to be patient, we knew the wickets would come. We were missing Andrew Twyford, so to get them out for 150 without our strike bowler was pleasing.
"We batted really well, at 3-80 we are on top with batsmen in the sheds, but we still have work to do next week."
The Rats sit just 2.5 points ahead of Lake Illawarra on the ladder, with the Lakers on top in their clash with Shellharbour. After reaching 9-150, Lake Illawarra reduced Shellharbour to 4-43 at stumps.
Finally, Kiama/Gerringong are 8-122 in response to The Rail's 161.
