Two men have been arrested after they jumped into Lake Illawarra in a failed bid to evade police.

One of the men managed to swim to Hooka Island before being taken into custody, while the other was captured in the water.
Police allege a pursuit began after officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to stop a stolen Volkswagen Golf on Edgeworth Avenue, Kanahooka, just after 10.30am.
Police chased the driver through Kanahooka and Dapto, before cutting it short due to safety concerns.
About 12.30pm, the Volkswagen was found abandoned on Hooka Creek Road at Berkeley.
The driver and passenger were spotted fleeing into nearby bushland before entering Lake Illawarra.
Officers arrested a 26-year-old man in the water.
A 28-year-old man managed to swim to Hooka Island, where he was arrested by police on a boat.
Polair and the Dog Unit assisted Lake Illawarra officers.
Both men were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where inquiries continue.
The younger man was later released pending further inquiries.
