PRIVATE CONCERNS
John Macleod, never have I read such an accurate description of what has happened (gone wrong) with our state government (A Private Concern, Illawarra Mercury, March 16, 2019). The sooner it gets back to what you were part of, the better but don't hold your breath.

NEW HOSPITAL NEEDED
We have gone backwards with hospitals and emergency departments. In the 1950s our population was a lot smaller but we had four smaller hospitals each with an emergency ward. Namely Coledale, Bulli, Wollongong and Kiama.
Years later the State Labor Government built Port Kembla which was a lot larger. Then Coledale and Kiama were closed for uses as a hospital although Kiama's emergency ward carried on for a while. Further on Shellharbour was built and Port Kembla closed as a general hospital but the emergency was still in use for a while. Then Bulli and Port Kembla lost their emergency wards so we are now down to two. Our population has grown, it is no wonder our two emergency wards like our two main hospitals trying to cope with a 21st Century population. We need a new large hospital with an emergency ward located in the Bellambi, Woonona area to ease the situation in the northern suburbs which would reduce the overload on Wollongong.

A LIFTING FEELING
In the Illawarra Mercury on June 14, 2009, Noreen Hay announced that $11.4 million had been allocated in the State Budget for lifts at Unanderra station.
Four years later she claimed that the work didn't go ahead due to "engineering problems". The Americans were able to put men on the moon in July, 1969 but the ALP couldn't build some lifts at Unanderra in 2009. If elected on 23 March will Paul Scully and Ryan Park commit to finally doing this work?
Graham Johnston, Figtree
ED'S REPLY: Labor has committed to building the lifts, as has the Coalition.
IN THE MINORITY
In minority governments power is shared. In one party governments power is in the hands of a few. Lord Acton said something about how power corrupts. Remember him when casting your vote on Saturday.
Reg Wilding, Wollongong
EGG-CELLENT CONTRIBUTION
Is there any truth in the rumour that Senator Fraser Anning is pushing to have the sale and carrying of high capacity egg cartons banned in Australia?
Doug Steley, Heyfield
TERRIBLE ATTACK
On behalf of myself and my two sons, deepest sympathies to all those who've lost a loved one in this heinous crime in Christchurch. A terrible attack on decent people.
