CFMEU Industry Safety and Health Representative Stephen Barrett has been in contact with the mine and explained the situation was not a good thing but can happen occasionally.
"They've had a floor break in their long-wall tail gate which has contaminated the atmosphere," Mr Barrett said.
"It's cracked up the floor in the roadway and the gases from seam below have come up."
He said there was no cause for Helensburgh residents to be concerned.
The NSW Government resources regulator was notified of the incident around 6pm on Thursday that workers had been "withdrawn from the mine".
"Inspectors are currently onsite monitoring the situation and workers are prohibited from re-entering the mine until investigations have been completed and it has been assessed as safe to return underground," they said in a statement.
"As inquiries are ongoing, further comment will not be provided."
