Sharon Marsh, election manager for the Wollongong district said all 29 polling booths in their area were open on time at 8am.
"Everyone is up and running, and the crowds are coming through as we speak," she said.
"Everything is going well, and we're progressing nicely through the day."
Polling booths will be open until 6pm.

According to NSW Electoral Commission figures, early voting has been popular in this State election - available data shows more than 1.3 million people have taken up the option across the state.
This includes more than one million people who voted in person at 194 early voting centres.
The NSW Electoral Commission has so far received more than 82,700 postal votes.
Postal voters must vote by 6pm on Saturday and ballot papers must be returned by 6pm on Wednesday, March 27.
Mobile voting was delivered to more than 13,700 people at declared facilities including nursing homes, aged care facilities and hospitals.
More than 207,000 people have also voted using iVote.
