He celebrated his win with colleague Keira MP Ryan Park and the Labor Party faithful at Corrimal RSL on Saturday night.
"Wollongong was the first seat claimed by Labor at this election," Mr Scully said.
"It has been two years of hard work.
"It is quite an incredible result and quite a humbling result.
"I would like to thank everyone in Wollongong who put their faith in me to represent them for another four years."
Mr Scully thanked the party faithful, supporters and volunteers for all their work as well his office staff and his family for their support.
NSW Labor held the seat with a margin of 13.4 per cent.
The Wollongong MP, who was first elected at the 2016 by-election, had a swing of 7.7 per cent in Labor's favour.
He had secured 73.7 per cent of the vote on Sunday afternoon.
Counting continued on Sunday but Mr Scully had comfortably won all booths against Liberal's Zachary Fitzpatrick.
Mr Scully said he never took any election for granted and was at Wollongong Town Hall since 8am on election day trying to secure as many votes as he could.
"Voters have been really receptive to Labor's message for the Illawarra as they have been for the past two weeks while I have been at pre-poll," he said.
Mr Scully said he would not have any rest because his "Wollongong Beautification Project" started on Sunday where he and his father would take down all of his election signs.
"If you have been annoyed by seeing my face all around, like my wife has, then they will come down on Sunday," he said.
"I like to take them down in the first couple of days after an election. Both Ryan's dad and my dad, who are in charge of the signs, will be out taking them down with us."
Mr Scully said he looked forward to "fighting for a fair share for Wollongong" over the next four years.
