Wollongong led twice away from home but gave up a pair of equalisers in the second half to drop their first two points of the campaign.
The point ensures they remain top of the competition, but Wilskhire felt it should have been by more.
"It's a tough place to come but we came away feeling disappointed," he said.
"We were ahead twice and were pegged back twice.
"We just weren't clinical enough with our chances and didn't put them to bed when we had the opportunity.
"There were a lot positives to take from it still. I couldn't fault the boys desire.
"To come away from home and take the game to them was great to see. We didn't take a backward step.
"I am proud of the boys."
In-form Wollongong striker Thomas James continued his scoring spree, firing home his fifth of the season with a stunning 38th minute thunderbolt into the top corner.
The Wolves carried the advantage until the 57th minute when Jordan Roberts leveled the score.
But just three minutes later the Wolves led again when Nikola Djordjevic headed home from a set piece.
Tariq Maia proved to be the hero for the hosts as he rescued a point for United with a deflected effort in the 82nd minute.
Wollongong are on the road again next week as they take on Sydney FC at Lambert Park.
