Between October 22 and 28 last year, 121 residents who took part in the survey and observed 6524 individual birds of 137 different species.

"These bird counts are a valuable tool for Birdlife Australia to fill a knowledge gap - more is known about Australia's threatened birds than Australia's common backyard birds," Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said.
Threatened species sighted included the Powerful Owl, Swift Parrot, Glossy Black-Cockatoo, White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Eastern Curlew.
The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is coordinated by BirdLife Australia each October.
An annual survey has the potential to be an extremely valuable monitoring tool for Australian bird species and communities.
