It was to be a day of celebration for the Power, as they unfurled the premiership flag, but the opening round clash was stopped with Figtree leading 5.11 (41) to 2.3 (15).
It is understood a prominent member of the Kiama club suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived by ambulance crews.
Umpires have been praised for their quick actions to halt the game when it became clear there was an emergency on the sidelines.
A support session will be provided through a national chaplaincy program for the Kiama club, while Figtree players have also been offered counselling.
It seems insignificant as a result, but Figtree sit at the top of the ladder after being impressive to launch the new season.
Elsewhere, Wollongong Lions marched to a 33-point victory over cross-town rivals the Bulldogs at Keira Oval.
Sam Wilson kicked five goals, as the Lions kicked four unanswered goals in the first term, before the Dogs reduced the margin to 11 at half-time.
The Bulldogs were still within reach at the final change, but the Lions booted four goals to one in the last term.
In the other game, Northern Districts held off a spirited Bomaderry fightback to win at Artie Smith Oval.
Brendan Davis kicked five for Northern Districts in the 10.10 (70) to 9.7 (61) win, but Bomaderry kicked three goals to one in the last quarter.
