Earlier reports suggested it was on the on-ramp itself.
Traffic is still heavy in the area with one of two northbound lanes closed.
Motorists should allow extra travel time.
8:55am: One person has been taken to Wollongong hospital with minor injuries after an earlier accident at the M1 on-ramp at Fowlers Road near Dapto.
NSW Ambulance Illawarra district Inspector Terry Morrow said it was a two car accident with one running up the rear of another.
"One car initially did catch on fire for a short period of time, but was able to be extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW," he said.
8:45am: A Fire and Rescue spokesman has confirmed the accident occurred on the Fowlers Road on-ramp heading onto the M1 northbound.
Earlier reports suggested the accident was near the Kanahooka Road on-ramp.
A vehicle which had been alight has also been extinguished.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area. However it's understood traffic is slowly getting through on the shoulder/emergency lane.

The Mercury understands two cars have collided near the on-ramp at Kanahooka Road around 8:26am, with one car becoming engulfed in flames.
A NSW Police spokesman said all occupants were able to get out of their vehicles, though some have sustained minor injuries.
Northbound lanes are blocked though it's believed traffic is moving slowly on the shoulder/emergency lane.
Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance and police are currently on scene.
