PolAir and the NSW Police dog unit were called in to help with the search following the single-vehicle accident, which happened northbound on the Princes Highway, near the Hutchinson Street exit to Bombo.
Police believe three people were inside the car when it crashed into bushes about 8.50pm.
All of the occupants then fled the scene.
A search got under way, with police dogs helping officers on the ground and PolAir scanning from above for some time.
However, no one was found.
There were no witnesses to the crash, police said, but three people were seen running nearby at the time.
It's understood two of the occupants later presented themselves to hospital. They have spoken with police.
The search for the driver was continuing on Monday morning.
Police investigations are ongoing.
