Police were called to St George Avenue just before 10am on April 9, following reports a man had been carjacked.
Officers were told a 48-year-old man was approached by another man, who threatened him with a firearm before stealing his silver Range Rover.
A large-scale search, which involved highway patrol officers and PolAir, got under way and the Range Rover was found unattended at Berkeley about 11am.
Later that day, Wollongong police issued an arrest warrant for 42-year-old Glenn Robert Wilson.
On Monday, after almost one week at large, Wilson handed himself in at Lake Illawarra police station and was arrested.
He has been charged with robbery whilst armed with dangerous weapon.
Wilson was refused bail.
His case was mentioned in Wollongong Local Court on Monday, where he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused by Magistrate Michael Stoddart.
The matter returns to court on Tuesday.
