Inspector Brett Wall said officers were called around 7.46pm on Wednesday to reports of a man assaulting a woman walking near the corner of Pioneer Road and Carters Lane in Towradgi.
Police patrolling the area found the pair - a 37-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman - at a bus stop on Squires Way near the Innovation Campus.
It's alleged the duo may have been intoxicated at the time and soon turned their violence towards officers who were trying to help.
Inspector Wall said due to the "aggression" displayed by both parties, more officers in the area responded to the incident - resulting in around seven vehicles seen lined up along Squires Way.
"Through the process of searching the male he became aggressive towards police, so amounted to a physical altercation and led to the male being tasered by police," he said.
It's understood the woman also lashed out at police. The pair were arrested and charged, including with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
Both will appear before Wollongong Local Court on May 21.
