The appeal is taking place on May 25-26.
The money raised from the Red Shield Appeal will go towards The Salvation Army's network of services that help Australians in need.
The Salvos say a growing number of Australians are being overwhelmed by the continual rise in the cost of living, and are turning to them for support.
Illawarra community fundraising and public relations coordinator for the Salvation Army, Karen Walker said more than ever, the Salvos need volunteers to help raise funds for the Red Shield Appeal.
"The Red Shield Appeal is a fun and simple way that Australians can really make a difference in alleviating the hardship being faced by so many people, right across our nation," Ms Walker said.
Ms Walker said the Salvos can only continue to meet the Illawarra community's growing needs with the support of volunteers.
"Through the support given to us, we are then able to fund the vital services that we run within the Illawarra community," she said.
"We cannot do this alone.
"We all have the opportunity to be beacons of hope for others and by partnering with the Salvos for just a few hours over the Red Shield Appeal weekend, you can give hope where it's needed most."
To volunteer, phone 13 SALVOS (137 258) or register at the salvationarmy.org.au website.
