The Wollongong Freedivers undertook the 'Good Friday Underwater Cleanup' in and around Wollongong Harbour.
The first ever Wollongong Harbour Land And Sea Clean Up took place earlier this year as part of Clean Up Australia Day events.
The plan was for divers to target rubbish on the sea floor, surfers to clean the water around the harbour and community groups and the public to target the harbour foreshore and City Beach.
However, the underwater part of the event had to be postponed, as diving in the harbour wasn't deemed possible due to sewage contamination.
The Wollongong Freedivers is a non-for-profit group that organises regular underwater clean-ups in places such as Wollongong and Kiama Harbour.
The group's founder, Wollongong resident Sandra Dohring said these are often conducted in collaboration with various community groups.
About a dozen members took part in Friday's event.
They spent 90 minutes on Friday collecting a broad range of rubbish items.
"Usually the events are open to the public, but we ask that people that want to join know how to swim and dive properly because there's always a risk with being in the way of boats and things like that," Ms Dohring said.
"So people need to be very aware of boat traffic and not pushing themselves too much... We're just relying on each other."
Ms Dohring also urged the public to "use the bin".
"Most of the waste that we're finding into the harbour, it's something that people are disposing of, or just dropping on the floor and then is being washed out with the rain through all the storm drains and things like that," she said.
"So all this waste could be avoided if people actually use the bin in the first place."
