"By following some simple tips, you can keep your family safe and lessen the impact of your electricity use on the household budget," he said.
Mr Pitman said a good first step was to check your home to see how heat can be kept inside.
"Consider using blinds and curtains to reduce heat loss through windows and stop any draughts under doors using door snakes," he said.
"Do not to piggy back winter appliances on power adaptors and keep them a safe distance from combustible items like curtains and wall hangings."
Now was also a good time to complete routine annual maintenance around the home.
"Change the battery in your smoke detector and operate the safety switch on your switchboard by pushing the test button. This will make sure it operates properly during an electrical incident," he said.
"Now is a good time to remove dry leaves away from gutters and outdoor lighting, but please make sure to stay well clear of overhead powerlines when working with ladders and metal tools."
