Beau Wiles was sentenced to a maximum of 12 months in prison in Wollongong Local Court this week.
The sentence was backdated to April 18, meaning the 30-year-old will be eligible parole on November 17.
Wiles appeared in bail court on Good Friday charged with larceny, but was denied release from custody.
Police facts, tendered to the court as part of his release application, said officers allege Wiles and a co-accused entered the Figtree Grove shopping centre - where there is a 24-hour Kmart - at 3.38am on April 18.
Police said CCTV footage clearly identified the accused wearing a blue hooded jumper and black track pants.
The facts said Wiles "appears to make efforts to cover his tattoos", before making his way towards The Coffee Emporium.
It's alleged Wiles then jumped the counter of the shop and grabbed a white bag, which contained the cafe's till float of $300 cash, along with a coffee card stamp.
Police said he then jumped back over the counter and left the shopping centre with the co-accused.
Wiles was later arrested on Burelli Street in Wollongong.
In applying for bail on Friday, Wiles' defence lawyer Laura Fennell argued he "wanted his liberty today to celebrate" a family member's birthday because he had missed it for the previous three years.
Ms Fennell also argued to the court CCTV footage should not be used to identify the accused.
However, the registrar said she didn't believe Wiles had established "exceptional circumstances" for his release and refused him bail.
His matter returned to court on Tuesday, with Magistrate Geraldine Beattie convicting him of the larceny charge.
Wiles was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 12 months, backdated to April 18, with a non-parole period of seven months.
He was ordered to pay The Coffee Emporium $300.
