"We're not exactly sure of the extent of it but he'll miss some time unfortunately," Hardwick said.

"It's disappointing because he's worked incredibly hard to get back.

"We're hoping for the best but he'll obviously miss some footy.

"... He's been through this before, he understands it, he'll deal with it and he'll be disappointed for a while.

"But he'll be trying to make those around him better - that's what a good leader does, and that's what he'll do."

Riewoldt booted two goals in the third quarter and was also involved in an awkward 'chicken-wing' tackle on Bayley Fritsch that will come under scrutiny.

With Dustin Martin struggling to shake the attention of minder Michael Hibberd, Kane Lambert (29 possessions), Bachar Houli (32), Dion Prestia (30) and Nick Vlastuin (28) were the prime movers.

Riewoldt's injury follows news of a setback for skipper Trent Cotchin in his comeback from a hamstring injury and the season-ending knee injury to Alex Rance.

"We're certainly pleased with the way that we're playing ... it is very much a Richmond style of game we're delivering at the moment," Hardwick said.

"Crisis does create opportunity and some players have stood up, which we're really pleased with."
