Hundreds of people walked up the hill in the dark, and a shuttle bus transported veterans and elderly people to the top for the ceremony at 5am.
It was a stunning ceremony, with light horsemen and the lighthouse lit up to mark the occasion.
Singing led by Kiama's Sing Australia Choir was a unique feature of the service, and the bugle, originally played in Gallipoli in World War I, was played by Jamberoo's Warwick Sporne.
An hour later at Gerringong, a gentle hue of light beamed from the horizon as the dawn service started.
Hundreds had gathered as a mark of respect for Australians who have died on the battlefield, who succumbed to the perils of the sea or the air in war, those who suffered as prisoners of war, and those who returned from war, but would sadly never be able to leave the horrors of war behind them.
Anzac Day services and get-togethers will continue through the day in Kiama, Gerringong and Gerroa.
Lest we forget.
