They assist people with a disability and the less able to use our public transport services, they ensure the safety of passengers on our trains, they assist in the event of an emergency, and they keep our trains running on time.
According to Alex Claassens, the Rail Tram and Bus Union NSW secretary, "The NSW Government have been trying to run the New Intercity Fleet, which will transport South Coast commuters to and from the city, without guards.

"Transport workers from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union believed this would be a huge risk to commuter safety and they were not going to let that happen without a fight.
"After campaigning and support from the public, in December last year, the RTBU finally received a commitment from the NSW Transport minister, Andrew Constance, that the Government would retain guards on the new service.
"This decision demonstrates what the community can achieve together when their voices are united and persistent.
"The New Intercity Fleet is expected to be rolled out across the South Coast, Central Coast and Blue Mountains lines from 2021.
"The RTBU NSW looks forward to continuing to campaign on issues that matter to commuters and workers, particularly ensuring that those in regional and rural areas are listened to."
