District Stake Oak Flats will have dedicated weekly sensory and wheelchair-friendly sessions as well as sessions for parents with prams starting in May.

Manager Michael Ford can't wait to see the smiles on kids and parents' faces.

"We have mums come with a couple of children who can skate and often one in the pram," he said. "They suggested we hold a stroller skate sessions. Many said they would love to come.

"We also thought about special needs children. A mother came in with her daughter who was in a wheelchair. Her other children could skate but the daughter could not. Now we will hold wheelchair-friendly and sensory-friendly sessions.

"There will be no reason anyone will have to sit on the sidelines."

Mr Ford said he wanted to cater to those children who were affected by light, loud music and people.

"We have some kids who have sensory issues who recently started skating with us," he said. "We have since seen them make massive improvements.

"These kids were coming in wearing ear muffs and some couldn't leave the house for more than 20 minutes. Now they are skating three times a week for two hours each.

"Others are no longer wearing their ear muffs, can handle the loud music, talk to people, request songs and have joined the roller derby.

"Two boys who had never skated before came in with a parent and carer and within 10 minutes the boys did not need any assistance and the carer could not keep up with them."

Mr Ford said the interest from parents had been very positive with many thanking the business for providing a more inclusive environment.

The parents with prams session will start May 8 and will be held weekly from 10.30am to 11.30am on Wednesdays.

The sensory and wheelchair friendly session will start May 9 and will be held from 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Thursdays with limited numbers.

The sessions will be in 10-week blocks during the school term.

Mr Ford has introduced another session aimed at younger primary school-aged children who want to party but can't stay up too late. There will be a kids disco theme from 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Fridays starting May 10.
