But these days it's not only catered for just "plane spotters".
This weekend's event on May 4-5 boasts one of the largest carnivals on the South Coast, with organisers promising to offer non-stop entertainment for the whole family.
Free unlimited carnival rides are included in the airshow entry ticket.
Ticket holders can also snag discounted McDonalds' meal deals, thanks to a partnership between event organisers Bright Events and McDonald's Illawarra.
The Albion Park, Fairy Meadow, Figtree, Stockland Shellharbour, Wollongong, Wollongong Central, Woonona, Warrawong, Warilla and Dapto McDonalds stores are offering the promotion on May 3-5.
"We are excited to continue supporting the Wings Over Illawarra event for its 13th year," McDonalds owner Katia Dwarte said.
"It is a great way to spend time with the family, support the community and have a fun family day out."
Bright Events director Mark Bright said in addition to Australia's best airshow, unlimited carnival rides and freestyle motocross displays, visitors will also have access to all the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society aircraft that are open for inspection.
He said thanks to a new partnership with HARS, all attractions were now included in the entry ticket price, with no more to pay.
"Wings Over Illawarra is truly an event for the whole family, with plenty of attractions for visitors of all ages," Mr Bright said.
"It includes amazing static aircraft displays, world class motocross displays, unlimited carnival rides, food stalls and ground displays, plus of course the high-octane aerobatic displays that we have come to expect at Australia's largest annual airshow.
"We have lots in store for 2019 including classic warbirds, heart-stopping aerobatics from Red Bull air-racer Matt Hall and stunt pilot Paul Bennet, modern military fighters and helicopters from the Australian Defence Force and a huge array of magnificent aircraft of yesteryear."
