Competing at the Australian Age Championships in Adelaide, swimmers from Wests Illawarra and Wollongong produced a number of quality performances.
The Wests contingent were particularly impressive, with the club finishing in the top 20 of the overall point score. Coach James Greathead said the club was proud of all their swimmers achievements.
"For many of the squad it was their first national meet and they had a valuable experience of learning to deal with the excitement and pressure that comes with a competition at this level," Greathead said. "The championships is the most challenging meet on their calendar and takes place over six days and nights.
"Quite a few of our swimmers made the finals and all of our swimmers turned in exceptional swims. The club comes home with 2 gold medals, 4 silver and 2 bronzes.
"The individual efforts of our medalists are awesome, however swimming is also about the team and the depth of our swim team is reflected in the club rankings at Nationals. WIAQ finished the 4th highest ranked team from NSW and in the top 20 from over 200 clubs from across Australia. This is a stunning achievement by our teenage swimmers."
Sydney Brown led the way, winning the girls 14 years 50 metre freestyle, claiming silver in the 100m freestyle and bronze in the 100m butterfly. Brown also combined with clubmates Chelsea Jones, Jaimie Delutiis and Bridie Delutiis, to finish second in the girls 13-14 years 4x50m freestyle relay.
Bailey Krstevski excelled in the long-distance freestyle events, winning two silver and one bronze medal. Such has Krstevski's improvement been this season, he had never made a national final before this year.
Wollongong's swimmers also excelled, with Jarrod Dyer claiming two gold, four silver and three bronze medals in the 17-18 years multi-class events.
