More than $1 million would be spent on shared pathways - to improve access for cyclists and pedestrians in Woonona, Gwynneville and Wollongong - if a Shorten Labor government wins the May 18 federal election.

Incumbent Cunningham MP, Labor's Sharon Bird, announced the cash splash on Saturday. It includes $120,000 to upgrade a shared path from Kareela Road to Campbell Street in Woonona.
At Gwynneville, $200,000 would fund an upgraded footpath from Vickery Street to Mercury Street, as well as a new cycling link along Fairy Creek from the Denison/Mercury Street roundabout to Vickery Street.
The lion's share of money, $530,000, would be for a new shared path along Denison Street, from Crown Street to Throsby Drive in Wollongong.
Also in the city, the upgrade of the university link shared path between the Smith Street underpass and Beaton Park would cost $210,000.
Ms Bird said the cash was from Labor's $260 million National Bike Paths Strategy and would complement Wollongong City Council's four-year, $12 million footpath, cycle and shared path program.
