Luke Rollinson, 37, may be putting plenty effort into training and raising money for the Cancer Council's Stars of Wollongong Dance for Cancer but that did stop him throwing his support behind the annual Endure for a Cure last Friday.
Mr Rollinson, of MMJ, and his young daughter Harper headed to Sydney's Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek for the Endure of a Cure 12 hour cycling relay to support research and held find a cure for cancer .
He was diagnosed with a rare genetic eye cancer when he was just 18 months old. It resulted in him losing his right eye.
But that was not the last impact cancer had on his family. Mr Rollinson's two children were born with the same rare cancer.
His daughter Harper starting chemotherapy at only 12 days old. And in attempt to save her sight, she lost her hearing.
Harper is now four years old and lives with ongoing challenges stemming from her cancer journey. But on Friday it was Harper cheering on her father's marathon journey around the race track at Eastern Creek.
At six months old Mr Rollinson's second child Eli also had treatment but did not need chemotherapy. Helping prevent childhood cancer is really important to him and his family and he has been able to give back and make an enormous contribution with the held of a generous community in the Illawarra.
After agreeing to be one of the 14 dancers this year Mr Rollinson said "any opportunity I get to raise money for a charity of this nature ... I'm happy to do that".
His Endure for a Cure team still managed to raise more than $2100 and are still taking donations on their Endure a Cure fundraising page. "I have raised close to $60,000 in total for the Children's Cancer Institute for this event over the last four years. I am pretty proud and amazed at the local support from the Illawarra community. It's so humbling".
