Rob Brown starred in the absence of goalscoring weapon Dinko Terzic, scoring a superb second half goal in the 3-2 win.
The Blueys trailed 2-nil before pulling one back before half-time, until Brown restored their advantage.
However, a penalty scored on the cusp of injury time ensured some nervous moments for Coniston coach Jeff Allport during the three minutes added on.
"It's a huge win for the club and certainly adds some belief for us," he said.
"Tarra is a great team, they're really well coached, so I couldn't be happier with how we played and worked to win.
"Rob Brown was outstanding without Dinko, who has been such a key part of finding goals this season.
"But we know it's still early, we have to keep our feet on the ground and keep pushing to be with the top teams."
Coniston are now one game off second position on the IPL standings and have won three games in a row, unbeaten since a 5-2 defeat to high-flying Albion Park a month ago. The White Eagles showed why they're the competition pacesetters with an 8-2 thumping of South Coast United.
Corrimal put five past Woonona at Ocean Park, while Wollongong United edged champions Bulli 1-0 and Olympic scored the only goal against Fernhill.
