Started in April and expected to be completed in July, the lights at the Victoria Street intersection were the result of residents' call for action.
"The community feedback demonstrated a desire to see council improve the safety of both pedestrians and motorists in this location," a Wollongong City Council spokeswoman said.
"The installation of the lights has come through this feedback rather than the records of crashes."
Businesses in the area have reported that pedestrians cross at this intersection to get to Woolworths rather than walk a few hundred metres down the road to a set of traffic lights.
There has also been an issue with motorists ignoring the no-right turn out of Victoria Street.
The spokeswoman said sequencing for the new traffic lights will allow for that right turn to take place.
