A strike force has been established after a man died and three were badly injured in a crash at Albion Park Rail earlier Saturday.
A Ford Territory was travelling south on Princes Highway at 2.20am when it ran up the back of a petrol tanker which was turning out of Creole street.
A 27-year old man who was a passenger in the vehicle died at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Territory, a 25-year-old woman, believed to be his sister, was airlifted to St George Hospital. She is now in a stable condition.
Her other two passengers, a man and woman, both aged 25, were rushed to hospital and are now also in a stable condition.
Strike Force Warrane has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
"They hit the truck so hard that it almost jackknifed," one witness said.
Another motorist on her early morning commute to work at 5am saw a heavily police presence.
"There were heaps of police with torches walking together in a line scouring the road like they were looking for something.
"I had no idea there was a crash I thought they must have been looking for evidence for something, it didn't look like a crash scene," she said.
"You could get around the roundabout but then there were Barriers and we were detoured."
As inquires continue, anyone who witnessed the incident or events leading up to it, or anyone with dashcam vision, is urged to contact Lake Illawarra police.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
