Small earthquake shakes Mittagong

A small earthquake that shook Mittagong in the early hours of yesterday morning was not large enough to cause any damage, according to Geoscience Australia.Several residents reported being woken by their houses shaking at 1.35am when the quake struck.The earthquake measured 2.7 magnitude on the Richter scale, and was located 5km north west of Mittagong.

Leave a message belowA Geoscience Australia spokeswoman said the earthquake was relatively small.In comparison, the earthquake that devastated the central Abruzzo region of Italy earlier this month measured 6.3 on the Richter scale."The earthquake has woken some people up. They have reported a feeling of being shaken and hearing strange noises," the spokeswoman said."But there are no reports of any major damage or injury."Earthquakes of magnitude two and above occur in the Mittagong and Bowral area on average every three to four months.The largest earthquakes within a 70km radius of Mittagong and Bowral since 1960:
