Police allege recent parolee Kyle David John Alcock was a passenger in a stolen car that had been involved in a chase with police less than 20 minutes earlier and was found abandoned in Boddington Drive at Horsley after the occupants dumped the vehicle and fled on foot.
A police dog tracked Alcock's scent from the car into nearby bushland, finding him hiding in tall grass a short time later and apprehending him with the snap of its jaws.
Alcock was charged with failing to disclose the driver's identity and being carried in a stolen vehicle.
He sought release on bail in Wollongong Local Court on Friday but it was refused, with Magistrate Susan McGowan saying the case against Alcock appeared to be a strong one.
Court documents reveal the car had been taken from a unit block in Avondale in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Police spotted the vehicle speeding along Brook Street in Dapto just before 10.30am and attempted to pull it over, however the driver accelerated away.
Officers gave chase but had to terminate the pursuit a short time later over safety concerns.
Witnesses told three occupants - two men and a woman - were seen to abandon the vehicle in Boddington Drive and run from the scene.
In court on Friday, defence lawyer Joseph Healey conceded Alcock had an unenviable criminal record but said his client intended on defending the charges.
The matter will return to court on July 9.
