Part of Market Street was cordoned off as police established a small exclusion zone around the station.
Illawarra Police Rescue crews were called in to inspect the suspicious package.
"They've assessed the item and as a result they have seized it and will conduct some further tests on it and now the station is back open," Inspector Don Faulds said.
The road block was removed shortly after 10am and the front doors of the station have reopened.
More details to come.
