Shellharbour City Council is set to proceed with the unpopular move to close Warilla and Albion Park swimming pools for an extra 11 weeks a season. In the council's proposed 2009-10 budget, to be approved tonight, Albion Park and Warilla pools will open eight weeks later and close three weeks early to save $100,000.The move has outraged swimming clubs in the Shellharbour area, who fear shortened seasons at the two pools, combined with increased fees at the Oak Flats venue, will make the sport unviable and could spell the death knell for clubs.Albion Park Amateur Swim Club president John Zelvis said the extended closure would cut the club's pointscore nights from 20 to 14.Closing the Albion Park pool on hot November days was a kick in the teeth for kids, he said."(The council) is just asking for trouble," Mr Zelvis said.Tony Speelman, who runs swim lessons in conjunction with the Shellharbour-Warrigal club at the Warilla pool, said the extended closure would impact on free learn-to-swim programs.Oak Flats Swimming Club vice-president Robert Cusack said his club faced an extra cost of $5000 for pointscore this season because of increased fees, which came on top of a 15 per cent rise in lane hire charges."The only way we can deal with this is to increase charges to parents and this makes it a less viable sport ... at a time when we're dealing with childhood obesity and trying to encourage children to be active," he said.Ironically, the council this month paid tribute to the city's most talented young swimmers - most of whom are involved with swim clubs - with the presentation of the annual Beverley Whitfield awards.
