Year 5 and 6 students from the school have taken up the challenge to enter in the Illawarra Mercury's Take Wollongong to the World Logo Competition.
The competition is challenging people in this community to try and come up with a fitting logo for the 2022 UCI Road World Cycling Championships, which will be held in Wollongong.
The competition is a unique collaboration between the Mercury, Cycling Australia and Destination Wollongong and is open until 5 pm on June 28.
St Michaels teacher Emma Groves presented the competition to the students, who were quick to jump at the concept.
"Two weeks ago I brought the competition to the kids and said 'What do you think about doing it?' and they were extremely passionate," Ms Groves said.
"They love sport, they love cycling and they love visual arts.
"I gave them the information and unpacked it for them - utilising the UCI colours and incorporating them into the artwork, the lighthouse, the Sea Cliff Bridge and the iconic parts of Wollongong in the logo."
Outside of resulting in some stunning logo designs to enter into the competition, Ms Groves said the competition had helped the kids identify the significance of the world championships coming to Wollongong.
"Individually, they are thinking 'what does this mean to me?'," she said.
"We read through the Mercury's article about it and we actually looked up the UCI's past events so we did a lot of research before we started.
"Once the students had the 'why?' they had a lot of ideas about it and how it's important to Wollongong
"It's a massive deal. They couldn't believe it. They saw it was in Yorkshire one year, has been all over the world and they couldn't believe it was coming to Wollongong and how special that is for our community."
There is a major overall prize for the winning entry, which includes a money-can't-buy VIP pass for two over the course of the championships, but there is also a schools prize which includes a school visit and a clinic by members of the Australian cycling team.
The winning logo will be under consideration to be used as the actual logo for the event, which will be used worldwide to promote the championships.
