That's the message behind Shellharbour City Council's Look Out Before You Step Out campaign.
It will see warnings spraypainted on the side of the road near crossings to get people with their head in their phones to look up.
"We know there have been a number of pedestrians that have been hit by vehicles because of the fact that they've been distracted or were looking at their phone and have stepped out on the road without thinking about it," said Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba.
A council spokeswoman said pedestrians accounted for almost a quarter of all people killed or injured on Shellharbour roads over the past five years.
