But being the founding director of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) at the University of Wollongong is one of his career highlights.
Another highlight for the Balgownie resident is being acknowledged in the Queen's Birthday Honours with an AM for significant service to science education in the field of superconducting and electronic material.
"I am very delighted to receive this honour. It is a recognition not only for myself but for all my colleagues, my former and current students for their dedication and contribution to my career," Prof Dou said.
"Over the last 30 years we have built the institute from nothing to now a world class materials research institute through generations of many alumni members' effort.
"I would like to thank my family members for their support, in particular to my wife Distinguished Professor Hua Kun Liu who has sacrificed her career, took care of our children and dedicated all her life and energy to contribute to my career."
A Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, since 1994, Prof Dou also received the Centenary Medal in 2001 for service to Australian society in materials science and technology.
A Senior Professional Fellow with the Australian Research Council (2002-2012), the distinguished professor is also a highly cited researcher and is the program leader for Automotive CRC 2020 and Arena project.
Prof Dou has also supervised 90 PhD students to completion and more than 60 postdoctural and visiting fellows from five continents.
