So therefore it was only fitting the Mount Pleasant couple would be honoured with their OAMs together.
"It's really special," Di said.
Both were nominated by good friend and fellow OAM Bill Dowson.
The couple, who owned Harrison's Pharmacy in the Mall for 20 years, have a long history of volunteering.
They met while training in pharmacy at university and have been married almost 45 years.
For the Norths, community involvement has been an experience they've shared with their sons Greg and Jono and their four grandkids,
"Our kids went through scouting and now our grand daugther's doing it so now David's still out there helping with the cub pack at Dapto," Di said.
"We've made lots and lots of friends and you get back far more than what you give.
"Volunteering leads to a better respect of people and a better understanding of people, I think," David said.
"And I think it keeps you healthy."
David is a life member and former long-time president of the Illawarra Basketball Association, a life member of the Illawarra Pharmacists Association, Wollongong's 2018 Senior Citizen of the Year and has had a wide range of roles in Scouts Australia.
Di has been a long-time scorebench official with local and NBL basketball and has held numerous roles in Rotary through the Rotary Club of Sunrise.
Di will be Rotary's District Governor for 2019-20 overseeing all clubs in the Illawarra and beyond.
This will see David play a supporting role in what is a huge commitment, where Di supported David in a lot of his roles earlier.
They both volunteered during the Sydney Olympics and Paralympics and Di actually did the scorebench for the gold medal basketball game at the Paralympics between the Netherlands and Canada.
