The motorway from the Old Princes Highway intersection at Waterfall to Bulli Tops will close between 8pm and 4am from Sunday, June 16 through to Thursday, June 20.
"Littering and dumping of rubbish is a major problem along the M1," a Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said.
"Litter thrown from cars collects along the roadway and in the drains, and blows into the national park where it can endanger native animals.
"There have been instances of trailer loads of rubbish being dumped at sites on the M1. During a recent closure we collected 16 tonnes of rubbish which had to be properly disposed of."
The closure to allow for maintenance work, including vegetation trimming and repairs to the road surface.
Motorists travelling between Bulli and Waterfall will be able to use the Old Princes Highway.
