Two days after the sudden passing of Kembla Grange life member John Fletcher, We're Off - a horse he had an owner's share of - saluted at $21 on Wagga Town Plate day. Fletcher was still making a shining contribution to the racing industry he dedicated most of his life.
On Monday, the 89-year-old will be posthumously recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his contribution to the sport. He was South East Racing Association chairman in the 1980s and 90s, an Illawarra Turf Club board member from 1981-2018 and an inaugural member of the Racing NSW appeals committee, serving since 1996.
Fletcher was also involved with the 2013 Hawkesbury Cup and Newcastle Spring Stakes winner Darci Be Good and Silver Slipper runner-up Captain Dash.
"He was not only a very passionate and conscientious racing administrator, but one of the nicest persons you would ever meet," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'Landys said.
